PDL Dirty tricks - Using EEP logo to influence Romanian citizens to vote for mass stray slaughter

Below is an email I received today from Carmen Arsene

A respected animal welfare activist in Romania who amongst others has witnessed the dirty tricks now played by the PDL party of Romania. In short what PDL are doing is having postponed the vote to mass kill all strays in Romania is attempting to gain the support of the public by basically fraudulently using pro-euthanasia leaflets and questionnaires using the European Peoples party logo on them, to insinuate that the Romanian Governments horrific plans actually fall in-line with European legislation.

Being that Romania has only been part of the European Union for a relatively short period, many citizens within Romania are actually unaware of European legislation. And us fellow Europeans know, the EU is against mass killing of strays, it is in fact pro- sterilisation and responsible ownership. This is also the view shared by the European Peoples Party.

Yet here is Romania's political party PDL using the EPP logo and insinuating that mass killing of strays is what the European Union wants. This is underhanded, fraudulent and wholly wrong in every respect. With these types of tactics being used the strays do not stand a chance.

Why does the PDL want to Mass kill strays? Because it is big business,in fact just catching and storing the dogs in what are laughingly called shelters brings in over 500 million Euros a year. And because killing of strays simply does not work, in fact makes the situation worse, by bringing in this law they are securing their megabuck enterprise by ensuring that millions of fresh victims are born every year rather than mass sterilisation that would stop those potential victims from ever being born!

ACT NOW

Just follow the following 5 steps below, you must act now or it really will be too late.

  5. Notify the Romanian Government , see email addresses below – Let them know you are aware of their dirty tactics and as a citizen of the European Union you will not stand for this type of manipulative behaviour for a member state. An example letter has been provided but I stress, please where at all possible please use it more as a spine to your own letter. Change the words and add your own where at all possible.

Correspondence from Carmen Arsene

Dear all,

Opposition/disapproval from Romanian Parliament of the parties PSD and PNL, the opposition of some colleagues party (PD-L) and of the coalition, resulted in PL 912 for dog management (turned into mass killing by PD-L amendments) don’t go through, such as the party in power, meaning PD-L, has every time decided the vote to be postponed. That it is happened in October 18 when, realizing that if they would vote, the project would fail, PD-L has decided to postpone the debate (for 2 November)

Under the title "Bucurestiul fara maidanezi" (Bucharest with no stray dogs), 10 days ago, PD-L has launched in Bucharest, a dirty incredible campaign and unprecedented in the history of Romania, for MASS KILLING OF DOGS, which stretches for several days across the country (especially in areas where the mayors are PD-L), under the title "Elibereaza-ti orasul" ("Clear out your town"):

- lay-out tents where signatures pro killing are collected

- people studded on all subway stations, in markets and crowded areas, sharing flyers

- they illegal use the state institutions (General Inspectorate schools, the Romanian Post), by which the flyers are distributed and signatures are collected. The people do not receive pension, unemployment wages, if they do not sign on the list brought by the postman

- the flyers (two types) include:
I. populist slogans, false information aiming arousing people's aggressivity against stray dogs wishing thus, as outraged citizens finally opt for the death of dogs
  1. false information that creates the impression that "PDL law" requires human management of stray dogs by sterilization, oral information given by representatives of the PD-L are the collecting signatures is for sterilization and / or sheltering, so that under deceitful, false slogans, by manipulating images, most of the citizens who signed the lists do not accept under any circumstances euthanasia as a method of management of stray dogs and they don’t know they actually signed for killing dogs
- To create a favorable image and to create the illusion in the eyes of the signatories that this campaign would be in line with EU policies, PDL has associated its image with the EPP - European People's Party (whose Membership is) to create the impression their criminal action against street dogs is agreed by the EPP. Thus, the header of lists where the signatures are collected contains EPP logo. Public opinion from Romania, NGOs, the great mass of animal lovers are outraged that EPP is part of this mendacious campaign that instigates to murder.
(attachment: PD-L tent; lists with signatures where EPP logo is; I dis not attach the flyers as they are in Romanian (if you would like please, let me know)
If mass killing of over 10 years did not get any result in the street so why this fight for a failed method??

The sustained fight in which PD-L sends in the street an entire artillery with an impressive ammunition, lists, flyers a.s.o to determine people, by false slogans, by manipulating text and images, is a new indisputable evidence of a mega business with killing dogs:

- The local authorities (and those behind them) allocate huge budgets - just on paper, reporting fictive consumption for sheltering, feeding, sterilization, identification, euthanasia, incineration - ‘legal’ frauds on public money

- profits by selling the dog food and veterinary medicines, that are supposed to be used for the stray dogs

- dog catchers who, to not take the stray dogs protected by the people, require a "protection fee" (around 25 Euro/dog)

- costs of incineration at PROTAN (a controversial company) per kg dead body and the transport for dogs is very expensive
The stray dogs, that incur the state no costs to live on street, are hunted by another type of mafia. Their killing, starvation in the town-halls extermination camps bring profits to a “fat” business up to 500 millions Euro just in the first stage!

Please, send your protest, contact (email, fax, phone) EPP - European People's Party to show your indignation for their image association (probably EPP does not even know about it) with the dog killing campaign launched by its member-party, PD-L (Democratic Liberal Party) in Romania.
Thank you.

Sincerely
Carmen Arsene

To Whom it may concern

Reference: Romanian Political Party PDL fraudulently using your party’s logo to gain votes for the mass killing of strays

I was horrified to recently learn that the above mentioned party has taken to the streets of Romania distributing propaganda to the citizens of various regions and are purporting your parties logo to endorse the amendment to the management of strays law in Romania, and in turn attempting to persuade those same citizens that this is what the European Union/Parliament also endorses.

I am sure you are aware that Dog killing is a huge business in Romania and the techniques that are applied to kill and store the animals caught are beyond barbaric and certainly not in-line with European standards nor does your party who represents people like myself within the EU endorse or consider this an effective method of stray management.

I urgently request that today you act upon this matter, and you together with other members of your party
  • Demand an immediate withdrawal of your logo being used in such a fraudulent and wholly wrongful manner, also
  • Demand an immediate public apology by the PDL party via various media outlets including Romanian News stations and the regional newspapers.

I hope that you will take on board the above and act appropriately as requested. The PDL by using your logo is also falsifying my view as a citizen of Europe, someone who your party represents within the European Parliament.

I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that Romania nationally and regionally is now under official investigation by the European commission for wrongful mismanagement of funds in regards to their handling of stray dog management as can be confirmed by Petition No. 0595/2011 lodged and accepted by the European commission earlier this month. I am sure that you would agree that the fact that this investigation is taking place this proves beyond any doubt that the EU does not agree with the way Romania is handling its stray problem and in turn any European reference within the PDL propaganda is wholly and deliberately fraudulent.

Yours Sincerely

As I am sure you are aware as an active political parliamentary member of the European Union, that Millions of European citizens across the member states are more than aware of Romania's techniques that are being applied to kill and store the animals caught, and agree that they are beyond barbaric and certainly not in-line with European standards nor does the EEP who represents people like myself within the EU endorse or consider this an effective method of stray management.

I urgently request that today you act upon this matter and you demand members of the PDL party

Considering Romania’s public image is most certainly at an all time low ad fast becoming one of the most NOT TO GO tourist hotspots because of the barbaric way you treat your animals, I would advise that the PDL parties fraudulent and manipulative use of the EEP's logo and in turn the European Unions view will do more harm than good in your hopes of positive recognition within the European member states. Fill a box with free samples of pet foods for our Aid Missions

There are many pet food companies that send free samples of their products to you. Today for instance I recieved a free sample box from Bakers which contained a days portion of their Bakers Meaty Balls and also a pack of 2 Bakers dental sticks. This I am donating towards the food donations for our forthcoming Aid Mission.

So all you would have to do, is say get 10 or more family members or friends to send apply for free sample packs and when they all arrive just collect them all, put them in a box and post off to us, or if you are close to one of our team members we will collect, or you could just find a whole load of companies that do this, and you could fill a box on your own....Some links below have been added below to start you off.

Vote for a group to recieve Aid from our charity in late September

During our visit one thing was clearly obvious, it was no good us just doing one aid mission, or two or three, but regular aid missions needed to be organised on at least a bi monthly basis. Our charity has now bought a van to allow us to do this, and we know we can fill that van....Problem is there are so many in need in Romania that to be honest the responsibility of choosing who gets the aid and who does not , does not sit well on our shoulders.

The aid will be split into 5 equal shares, the strays on the street get the first percentage, then GIA in Botosani and Animal Crew have been chosen by our team members to recieve a share each.. So that leaves another 2 groups for us to deliver aid to.

Thats where you guys come in. We are handing that bit over to you ............

VOTE NOW

On the 20th September the two who have the highest number of votes, we will visit the weekend of 23rd September. If the group/Individual isnt already on the poll, themn just add them and then vote for them!

We will do this for every Aid mission planned, so please do suggest a group and make sure you vote.

Miracle in Romanian Parliament-mass dog killing rejected (for the moment)‏

I thought you all would like to read this, it was sent to us today from the very respected Carmen Arsene...

Dear all,
"the worst possible thing is to have in mind that when you push the button on it’s written “yes”, you directly killed and, some of you, will do it tomorrow. You will kill directly with your hand, you will kill live creatures like us and you will not be aware of it today, maybe nor 10 years later, as other compatriots did not realized it, too. But I'm sure a day will come when you realize that you killed directly. And I deplore you for that day" said the leader of the Parliamentary Group of Minorities, deputy Varujan Pambuccian, addressing to his colleagues during a speech in which he urged the deputies not to vote for murder.

The law project PL 912, made in the form of mass killing of dogs through the order and contribution of PDL party, has debated yesterday in the Chamber of Deputies.
To be passed, 167 deputies (out of 333) had to vote "yes", so any member present would vote for euthanasia was very important for PDL party.
The nightmare has started from Sunday when I found how many efforts make the party in power, PDL, to implement mass killing. PDL’ deputies have been called by SMS to obligatory be present for voting on Tuesday. The directive of the party, came from the Romania ’s president, Traian Basescu, was all to vote for euthanasia.
On Monday I found out the vote is proposed to be secret and I realized that our chances were terribly decimated, and we don’t have any hope.
Then, yesterday morning two buses arrived to the Parliament with people, organized by the PDL, to counteract the “waves” made by animal lovers and claim euthanasia.
The plenum has started. PDL leader officially makes the proposal the vote to be secret. PSD president, Victor Ponta (husband of Daciana Sarbu, deputy in European Parliament and member on the Welfare and Conservation Intergoup of Animals, who always supported us) said: "we were voted by those in the balconies and by those who watch us now at TV. It is their right to know how we vote and our obligation is to assume our own vote. If you want to hide yourselves behind the the cards do it. We, PSD, PNL, PC, we will not vote, we will not introduce our cards vor voting and you will remain alone to respond to this new your contempt to your electorate." The first victory was: put to the vote of the deputies, the proposal for being a secret vote has been rejected.
PDL leader calls a break of 10 minutes for consultation. It became more clear the scramble fight of PDL to get euthanasia and how much important the stray dogs are for the interests of many!
Each group leader has brought together their people and have started to dispute the right for living.

After the 10-minute consultation, PNL leader, another party sustaining us, Eugen Nicolaescu, starts speaking and announces that the parliamentary groups leaders have concluded that the law must be returned to the Committee for public administration and to be discussed during the next 2 weeks.
The second victory: with 247 for (of 291 total) the proposal for being sent back to the Committee,  was approved.

a team from a veterinary college in Holland has also near us at the plenum

Why PDL has voted the law to be sent back to the Committee? Because, once the proposal for the secrecy of the vote had failed, they realized that the law will be also rejected or a lot of risks to be rejected are, so that the sending back to the Committee gives them a chance next time. But we have the new chance as well, to take out mass killing and come back to the initial form of the legislative project, sterilization and return, that, once adopted and applied, leads the stray dogs to become history.
If in the last week we fought the law of mass killing to be rejected now we can fight again for a real, effective, civilized law for managing the strays.
FOR THE STRAY DOGS AND FOR US YESTERDAY WAS A STUNNING WONDERFUL DAY.
I would like to thank you very much for your exemplary support you give to animals in Romania, for the demonstrations you organize in your countries, for the email and fax protests, for sterilization campaigns, for adoptions and for everything you do directly or indirectly for our animals. Without you, many would not have happened ever!
Sincerely,
Carmen Arsene

Romania Animal Aid Latest Rescues, arrived this week..Now safe in the United Kingdom

Rescued from torture and abuse in Romania, our latest rescued Romanian bundles of fur...Now safe and cared for with their foster parents Sorina and Stephen...Will be available for adoption soon.

Please help little Rascal and his family escape Romania and enter a world of safety and love

There are many good souls in Romania who are in desperate need of our help here in the west. They rescue and feed the dogs they find, hide them away from authorities and do what they can to get these innocent animals out of Romania and into safety where they no longer will be under threat of torture, abuse, starvation and poison.
One such person is Silvia, she found a small mummy dog and her litter of tearaways in a forest and her heart simply could not leave them there. She took them home with her where they now play with 6 other puppies that she found abandoned, whose mother no doubt had come to a violent end.
We heard Silvia’s pleas to help this small family and the other puppies she is watching over and pledged to help that family escape what will be (especially with the new law looming this week) certain horrific death.
Food, vaccines, chips, passports, transport all will cost money, and this is where we need your help,or rather those little furry mischief makers with waggy tails and big round eyes need your help.
We have already put into place (along with other wonderful people in the network) a safe secure location outside of Romania where the doggies will be able to safely stay until they are adopted. This will happen in approx 3 weeks time.

But that is then, and this is now, between now and then the puppies and their mummy need food, vaccines, chips, passports etc. All this is what we are right now raising money for.
If by a miracle this appeal collects more money than is needed (we are talking in thousands here) then this will allow us to do the same for other dogs, other furry families and to help continue the work we already do in Romania.

So please, dig deep,I know times are hard for all of us but I guarantee without ours and your help, times will be much harder for princess, rascal, daisy and the rest of thier family and adopted brothers and sisters
We will be keeping a log of their ongoing story, you can read for yourself how this little family is getting along. when they are safe and sound outside of Romania,we will add them to our Happy endings page..until then you can find their log here
